Production diary (week 5 and 6)

Week 5-
This week we started to look a little more at what song we would choose, we had already sent a couple emails trying to get permission but we got no responses. The group started to move more towards the indie rock genre and looking at a few different songs which took a couple days, we eventually decided on a song by James Bay called 'When we were on fire'. All the group were happy with the decision as we all enjoy indie rock music. We emailed James Bay's manager Paul to see if we could get permission and got a positive reply.
Week 6-
Now we had decided the song we started to look a little more into it, starting with analysing the lyrics of the song. This gave us an understanding of the narrative of the lyrics, also giving us a chance to plan the sorts of shots we would use. Our understanding of the video was that James
Bay was singing about a past girlfriend and their relationship, but always in the past tense.
The song did not have much of a narrative, meaning we were gonna have to use our imagination a lot more when creating the music video.
We slowly began to piece together a storyboard, as well as making a mind map thinking of different shots we could use in the video. We also got some help from peers to try and gain a diverse range of shots and ideas.

Our artists image

This is the spider diagram that we created to reflect how we our artist to appear and be known by the public. Doing this helped us to interpret our artists image into our music video, website and digipak. It gave us an understanding of what clothing he should wear, whilst also giving him a laid back, natural image. Because of his hobbies and interests, we can also incorporate things such as playing guitar into the video and using his likes/dislikes as an advantage when choosing locations.

Risk Assessment

Hazard
Risk level before (L, M, H)
Risk level after (L, M, H)
Control measures
Glass on the ground were we are filming
High
Medium
To prevent this we scanned the area before we started filming and cleared any glass we saw.
Nails in wood
High
Low
Before we started filming we moved any bits of wood that could have nails in them.
Tripping in the forest with the equipment
Medium
Low
We prevented this by sharing the equipment out between the group and wearing sensible footwear.
Cars on the main road, and lanes.
High
Medium
To prevent any serious injuries from happening we took extreme care when crossing road and walking through the lanes.
Being burnt from the fire
High
Low
We took extra care when lighting the fire, and wore suitable clothing and gloves to prevent being burnt.
Filming by the river & pond
Medium
Low
To prevent falling in to the river we made sure the area was suitable and had somewhere to stand away from the water.
Falling on the tracks at the train station
High
Medium
To reduce the risk of serious/fatal injury we would make sure we film behind the safety line and only done so when it was quite to reduce being pushed on the tracks by accident.
Filming whilst in the passenger seat and hitting a pedestrian/car
Medium
Low
Whilst sitting in the passenger seat of a car the cameraman would be putting their self out therefore we made sure the roads were clear of any pedestrians and cars.
Falling off a wall whilst playing guitar
High
Medium
Before the guitarist and singer climbed on to the wall we made sure the wall was secure, not slippery and that there was no glass. Before taking any props on to the wall we made sure both people were safe before beginning filming.

Digipak Layout

Our Digipak will have six panels, this will include the front cover, back cover, CD panel where the CD will be placed, and three other panels which we will fill with images. Not all digipaks are the same, Some artists choose to have more than one CD, and others sometimes choose other layouts with more or less panels.

Font Ideas- Digipak

These are some of the fonts we decided would look good on our digipak or website, we thought they fitted well with the genre of music, the song, and our artist that we had chosen. We thought it complimented our artists indie rock image that we had created,  giving a cool, unique feel to use for our digipak. We got the fonts off of 1001fonts.com, then went on to ask a number of different students in our class which font they thought would look best.

Filming locations

Brentwood skate park-
We chose Brentwood skate park as one of our filming locations as we felt it fitted well with our indie genre. We made sure we went there as early as possible in the mornings to avoid having to film around people using the skate park, instead we got there when it was empty giving us the freedom to film whatever shots we needed to.

My house-
We also chose to film some shots again my house, this is because I have a log cabin at the end of my garden. Filming in there again fitted well with our genre, giving a relaxed atmosphere and also meaning we could film at our own convenience. Although we only filmed a short part of our music video in the cabin, it worked as we wanted it too and fitted nicely with most of our other shots. However it gave us some variation of inside shots, as most of our other shots were outdoors.

South Weald Country Park-
South Weald park was one of our main locations for filming, as it is very large it gave us a good range of different shots. We chose to film here because it has a lot of forest and nature, we thought this would be good for our music video, emphasizing our indie genre. South Weald is also close to our school, meaning we could get there quickly and easily, giving us time more time to film and also giving us the chance to go back and re film shots that we did not like if necessary. South Weald also has some interesting sites and landscapes, making our video more appealing and enjoyable for our target audience.

Butterfly Meadows-
Butterfly meadows is a quiet, natural area located in Shenfield. It is a small woodland area, with some man made willow domes and tunnels, we thought this would be a good place to film where we could portray the calm and relaxed personality of our artist. Again it is easy to get to and only located 5 minutes away from our school giving us the opportunity to go back there as many times as we needed to get the shots that we wanted.
